Catalina lives in Valcinet which about one hour's drive from Moldova’s capital, Chisinau.
The family live together with their grandmother in a very old house where there is no running water. They essentially all live off their grandmother’s pension of around £25 per month – with a supplement in winter of £7 per month.
Catalina has 2 half sisters and one-half brother. Sadly, all the children have different fathers and her mother is addicted to alcohol. She has no job other than any seasonal work she can get in the village. None of the fathers take any care of or interest in the children.
As one of the other children said:
Here I can feel free, full of energy and creativity. I love my peers and my teachers. From the very first day I came, I felt that I would spend the most beautiful moments of my childhood here
Catalina attends our partner’s after school club at Esther House. Here she receives homework support, does arts and crafts, has extra English lessons and dance.
More importantly, she has a safe place to go where she has friends and support staff with whom she can confide in and have fun and fellowship with.
She is in her 4th year and is a good pupil, especially liking Romanian and French and is very good at painting.
